I keep seeing discussion around the epidemic of violence against women happening in Australia right now, and calls for action from the government.. and rightfully so.
I'm seeing demands that funding go towards organisations supporting people in violent situations, funding go towards first line responders, etc - all of which, yes! (except for funding cops.. fuck that noise).
I'm seeing discussion about how often these (pitiful) funding offers miss Indigenous groups and don't address the even higher rates of violence happening against Aboriginal women and girls.
What I'm not seeing is conversation about how increasing the rate of Job Seeker would also address the problem.
An increased Job Seeker rate would not only allow women in these situations to leave, but something we know about domestic and interpersonal violence is that the strain of poverty makes it SO much worse. Increasing Job Seeker (and addressing poverty by other means) would see a drop in the rates of domestic and interpersonal violence.
The government doesn't want you to know that, because it then raises the question of how many women could have been saved by addressing poverty.
So, when you see them talking about pouring literal billions of dollars into AUKUS, ask yourself how many dead women and girls might still be alive if this government addressed poverty instead of cosplaying wartime.
