Yesterday evening's twilight over the Tularosa basin in southern New Mexico.
Is that monsoon fog moving in from the left?
No, it's White Sands illuminated by moonlight. (The waxing gibbous moon is out of the frame far to the left.) White Sands stands out compared to the darkness of the rest of the basin floor.
Mars is the brightest 'star' at the left edge of the frame, and the constellation Leo is dropping below the western horizon. (Regulus has already set.)
The lights of La Luz village are visible on the basin floor.

Saturday evening's two-day old crescent moon in the twilight sky, some stars in the constellation Leo, and sometimes the distant mountain horizon.
Photography in twilight is a challenge because the sky colors, their saturation and brightness are changing by the minute. But it's also an opportunity because so many options are presented to you.
These four photos show choices in composition, and over time they show changes in lighting and color. They are not presented in chronological order.
Which one(s) do you prefer? Do they convey different moods?

A shorter telephoto lens shows more of the sky and the lights of the village of La Luz on the floor of the Tularosa Basin.
Finally, as twilight gets fairly dark the stars of Leo's head and shoulders become visible in the dark blue sky.
A cornucopia of evening twilight shots, featuring the one-day old crescent moon and the head and shoulders of Leo.
First shot is a closeup view of the thin crescent in bright twilight...the sky is still only blue shortly after sunset.
Second shot captures the brilliant orange when the sun is about 8 degrees below the horizon.
3rd photo shows the moon moving down into thicker layers of smoke.

Anthropocene-Father’s most recent trip to the ER resulted in a blessing and an unpleasant reminder.
Called from ICU on day two and a nurse had come in and said that he had been his parole officer…that he’d had a firm but gentle approach that saved and turned his life around. He was grateful to have been able to care for him now…and return the kindness he had shown.
Makes me think how very far our LEOs have fallen in the 20 years since he retired.

NGC 3521: Galaxy in a Bubble
Spiral galaxy NGC 3521 lies 35 million light-years away in Leo. It features dusty, uneven spiral arms, star-forming regions, and young blue stars. Surrounding it are faint, bubble-like shells — likely tidal debris from past galaxy mergers.
