‘Los Angeles Is the American Dream Made Manifest’

As the city that made all my dreams come true continues to burn, a few thoughts on what has always made it so great (and the ghouls with pig shit in their veins currently celebrating its pain).

"The air, as dusk came, grew yellow, like the fog in Prufrock that licks its tongue into the corners of the evening. At five o’clock, oddly enough, tennis balls I had ordered online were delivered."

Colm Tóibín on his experience of the fire in Los Angeles, and reflecting on its random cultural destuction. The Thomas Mann House intact, Gary Indiana's personal library, just tranferred from New York, lost.

🔥As the Palisades and Eaton fires burned through thousands of acres on Tuesday, razing nearly 2,000 homes, the iconic Getty Villa remained standing with minor damage. Meanwhile, homes and trees around it went up in flames.
Getty staff have been consistently clearing brush from the surrounding area all year.

The apocalyptic sense of dread has only been heightened by reports of hydrants running dry and a critical shortage of firefighters, blamed by some on a $17 million budget cut for the Los Angeles Fire Department (the city meanwhile committed to $1 billion in raises and bonuses for the police department over four years). California prisoners continue to do dangerous work on fire crews for extremely low pay. Climate science deniers up to and including President-elect Donald Trump — who keeps vowing to withhold federal aid from the state during wildfires once he’s back in the White House — have baselessly claimed that the devastation is due to environmental safeguards. Equally infuriating: Alex Jones and Elon Musk pushing conspiracist gibberish on X, formerly Twitter, that chalks the fires up to a “Globalist Plot To Wage Economic Warfare.”
