Ok, weather nerds: ‘bomb cyclone’, WTF?

First of all, I was taught that the difference between a cyclone and a hurricane was the direction they rotated, and that hurricanes happened in the northern hemisphere and cyclones in the southern hemisphere.

Also: ‘bomb’ cyclone? This is a term I’ve never heard before. Are we just making shit up now, like we started doing with super-moons?

Last night's ECMWF, GFS, GDPS all in agreement that Lake Erie and Ontario will see gusts to.... 135 km/h on Friday & Saturday....fast enough to send a Delorean back in time...And huge areas of Quebec & Ontario land will see gusts to 100 km/h. Not much agreement on precip amounts, ranging from 35mm to 70mm worth, leaning strongly towards lots of rain and little snow.

I'm preparing for power outages...
