Sherco coal-fired power plant (largest in Minnesota) will be replaced by solar arrays being constructed on site.
*New* They're adding an iron-air battery to the solar installation to provide power when there's no sun.
PV arrays will produce up to 710 MW, whereas the first Fe-air batteries will be 10 MW. Not the scale needed, but Form Energy just started manufacturing, so this is a pilot of sorts.

Working on my self-contained solar setup. I need it in my new off grid house on the family farm, so built it in a wooden case on wheels so it can be moved around as I construct the house. Also needed it all enclosed so my 3 year old grand nephews can't touch any of the connections!!
It has a 3000W inverter and two 48V 5.1kw LiFePo batteries. I'm thinking of adding a third battery since there's space in the box for it - that way I'll have more capacity for those cloudy days. And this thing can even run my current house in town, so I'm keeping it here at home for the time being in case of any power outages this winter.

@davidho This was an interesting read. Particularly the "solar is booming" angle. A decade ago, give or take, new utility-scale solar became cheaper than operating existing coal-fired power plants. Good to see continued cost declines & increased installations.
Utility scale PV is dirt cheap. Now the challenge is which path will dominate:
renewables + fossil fuel peaking plants;
renewables + nuclear; or renewables + battery storage.

@SnowshadowII nuclear power is another scam, like #CarbonCapture. We need to get away from the drill-and-burn caveman-type of energy generation. #NuclearPower simply preserves monopolists' control of the energy markets. The most sustainable way to generate power is locally and in a distributed way. Every industry and ever home needs to be 100% self sufficient, no power lines needed (except locally). Stop mining, ban drilling, and jack up costs of greenhouse gas emissions to regulate pollution out of business... Unfortunately, at least in the US, voters seem to be more concerned about migrants eating pets and children getting sex change surgery in schools than the worsening #ClimateBreakdown

Wir sind hier gerade einer großen Sache auf der Spur, die den ländlichen Raum durchaus "revolutionieren" kann, im positiven Sinne. Und diesen Erfolg verdanken wir Robert Habeck und den Grünen. Leider ist das viel zu wenig bekannt...
Es gibt hier in der #Uckermark große Photovoltaik-Anlagen und Pläne für weiteren Ausbau selbiger. Diese Anlagen stehen natürlich nicht in der Stadt, sondern meistens in den Dörfern bzw. Gemeinden. Diese Gemeinden haben z.B. ein Ortsteil-Budget von weniger als 4000 EUR/Jahr. Von diesem Budget müssen alle Aktivitäten und Verbesserungsmaßnahmen finanziert werden. Alles darüber hinaus muss von der Stadt erbettelt werden.
Der im Jahr 2025 verpflichtende "Solareuro" beinhaltet aber auch, dass beim Neubau von PV-Anlagen ein bestimmter Anteil dieses Solareuro an den Ortsteil/Gemeindeteil fließt, in dessen Gemarkung die Anlage steht. Ein ursprünglicher Gesetzentwurf in Brandenburg schlug vor, 30 % des Solareuro in das Ortsteil-Budget zu geben und 70 % in der Stadt zu belassen.
In unserem konkreten Fall würde das Ortsteil-Budget damit plötzlich von ~ 4000 EUR/Jahr auf ~ 75.000 EUR/Jahr steigen. Das ist eine Steigerung auf 1800 % des Ortsteil-Budgets. Damit sind auf einmal ganz andere Dinge denkbar, wie z.B. eine Energiegenossenschaft, um Wärme- und/oder Stromtechnisch autark zu werden etc.
Leider wissen die wenigsten Ortsbeiräte von diesem Gesetz und lassen sich mit den üblichen Phrasen von ihren Städten abspeisen... Dabei ist das eine der wirksamsten Anti-AFD-Maßnahmen die ich mir vorstellen kann im ländlichen Raum.
