This is 2yrs old. SUVs & 'light trucks' have only gotten bigger...The case for separated bike lanes has never been stronger. Cities know bike lanes reduce 1] death by wankpanzer & 2] traffic congestion.
(Plus noise, particulates & carbon emissions).
BUT:
Provincial busybodies in Ontario & Alberta want to interfere with municipalities' rights to include bike lanes in their urban planning & infrastructure spending.
WHY? It gets out the rage vote.

"#BikeBus advocates waltzed in accompanied by a loud boombox, there were pothole donuts, city staff dressed up in uniforms including a traffic cone, people were making buttons and there were more high-fives than handshakes — it was a vibe I haven’t felt inside City Hall for at least a decade." #Portland #VisionZero #pdxBikes

BikePortland · Bike bus and road safety advocates take over Portland City HallHigh fives, a bike bus boombox, pothole donuts — it was the most upbeat Vision Zero event I've ever attended.

Among the reasons Vision Zero is critical: We never want to mourn another traffic violence death, as we and others were doing in this photo.

@sbv @ottawa @dwazou Just remember that Jim Watson didn't want #visionzero. He preferred to keep the status quo death rate of 20 to 25 pedestrians / people on bikes per year and to try to slowly reduce that by 5% a year.

A 5% reduction is one fewer death.

These deaths are the price we pay for voting in awful #Ottawa mayors who prioritize cars over people and austerity over improving the city. It's our fault.

Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia organizes its local "Ride of Silence" next Wednesday, May 21, starting at the north apron of #Philadelphia City Hall, at 6:45pm.

give.bicyclecoalition.org/even

For the past 20 years, cyclists throughout Greater Philadelphia have come together to ride silently in honor of riders killed or injured by motorists. Although bicyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the public often isn’t aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of cyclists themselves. The goal of this annual, international event is to not have another ride, but to have a year with zero bicyclist deaths.

A cyclist killed Thursday morning in West Philadelphia after being struck by a privately owned construction truck has been identified as Jeffrey Ishibashi, 50, of Lansdowne.

Ishibashi was riding east on Baltimore Avenue around 8:15 a.m. and was struck by a white Mack truck also traveling east on Baltimore as it turned right to go south on 58th Street, police said.

Ishibashi was pronounced dead at the scene. His home address is 2½ miles from the crash site.

He appeared to be riding in the bike lane and had the right-of-way, according to the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, based on a member’s review of footage of the incident.

According to police, Ishibashi became lodged under the truck after he was struck.

The bike lane is unprotected and is not separated from car traffic.
