any tips on microphones / preamps for field recording very quiet outdoor environments?

my Zoom H4n (from 2008 or so?) seems to have quite a high noise floor (after digital amplification in Audacity) when the rec level is set to maximum and the environment is almost silent.

what are people using these days?

the H4n has a 3.5mm socket marked EXT MIC on the back, but I've never used it, and there are two line-level (afaik?) inputs (combined 1/4" jack/xlr sockets) on the bottom that I've used to record mixing desk and room audio simultaneously for live gigs (no complaints for that use case).

I have also now set everything on my own bandcamp page to £0+ (pay what you want). There's noise music, live coding, free improvisation, mechanical techno, augmented field recordings, process music and more.

#NowPlaying this very odd cassette I randomly picked up last Bandcamp Friday from Spanish label Strategic Tape Reserve (the ones who included a "mostly safe" alcohol wipe to use "before handling the tape"). I feel like I just entered some sort of portal.

Gdy w końcu udało mi się wygospodarować parę godzin w tygodniu by iść w teren, zostawić w lesie drop riga, ponagrywać wiosnę, potem wrócić w to samo miejsce to okazało się, że powerbank w setupie na statywie się rozładował, a zasilanie w drop rigu odpięło się od rekordera i nagrałem tylko 3 godziny materiału w porze, która najmniej mnie interesowała.

Nagrania terenowe to sztuka rozczarowań, z których największym jest moja słaba umiejętność planowania rzeczy.
