#Proton Pass now allows users to attach files directly to password entries, supporting multiple file types with a 100 MB limit.

This feature centralizes essential files in one secure location, enhancing user #convenience and #privacy.

It’s accessible for paid plans through the web app, desktop applications, and the browser extension.

It's FOSS News · You Can Now Attach Files to Your Passwords with Proton PassProton Pass just leveled up with support for file attachments.

Proton is leaving because Proton cannot control the flow of information here on the Fediverse.

Most corporations mimic social algorithms to their advantage, particularly, to suppress news and information that may not paint them in a good light. Proton cannot do that on the Fediverse.

When Proton rebranded a few years ago, which caused some people to lose their accounts with no refund, they silenced any complaints on both Facebook and Reddit. I know, because I was one of those people. Most of you were happy to have the new upgraded accounts, but if you had the original family plan, which they discontinued (only to start selling a new family plan months later), you were not a happy person to find out you lost your service.

Additionally, it has been brought to people's attention that Proton now falls under Us-jurisdiction. Proton would like to argue that is only for Proton Wallet, but our legal system does not allow a company to pick and choose. Plus, even if they could (you cannot), it means they could still be pressured and influence by US Politics and US Laws now. This was another little fact, Proton wanted to suppress, but cannot because the Fediverse is organic, and not centralized.

I found two (2) password managers outside US-jurisdiction.

Neither am I completely satisfied with, because both of them are suspect, not in the terms of security, but whether you end up using a non-US based server with a non-US based company.

What do I mean?

1st, both companies are not directly Us-based. That's the good news. They also do not own any servers in the USA either, more good news.

1) 1Password, located in Canada, North America

2) pCloud, based out of Switzerland, operated out of Bulgaria, Europe. Despite their TOS, presume, Bulgaria
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCloud

But as I said, that's the good news, they're not US-based.

However, in the case of 1Password, they're owned by, AgileBits Inc, which again, still Canada. But their primary investor (shareholder) is Accel, formerly known as Accel Partners, is a global venture capital firm, located in California, USA.

For some people, that's not going to matter, because they do not directly own the company. But they do have the majority of shares, and that means a US-based company can indeed influence the Canadian company.

If that does not matte to you, that's fine, provided you use a VPN to sign up, and are sure you use 1Password Dot CA or EU, because otherwise you're likely to be hosted on their US-base servers. They do not own US-servers, but they do lease a few.

Which brings me to pCloud.

Also, you want to use a VPN, because their own documentation notes they assign you also to the server, depending on where you signed up from. I suggest using their pcloud DOT com/de/eu website. Else, you could end up on their US-based servers.

You can see a copy of the documentation here:
https://docs.pcloud.com

pCloud also has 1 other thing I find concerning. Alongside their monthly and yearly plans (they also offer a free plan to try them), they offer a "lifetime plan". Lifetime plans are often "cash grabs" because no corporation is really going to offer their services for an unlimited time, forever, with 1 small fee. pCloud has been around since 2014 (11 years), but if one day they grandfather this plan, or change names, or are bought by another company, I will not be surprised. I do not suggest you sign up using a "lifetime" plan.

These two companies (1Password and pCloud) are NOT a recommendation, and I am NOT going to put either on my list of recommended providers. But this is an option that may work for some of you. The goal was to find a provider that is not US-based and did not require you to host or manage your own services. This technically fits that requirement, but I am STILL looking for alternatives.

I keep getting asked this (repeatedly).

" What about Proton VPN? I think they are in Europe."

A division of Proton is now a US-based company. Particularly, Proton Wallet. Their Terms of Services, also goes into lengths concerning Us Laws and Us Customers. It goes beyond just the CEO's support for fascism leadership (Donald Trump).

Naturally, making this list is not easy. These are two types of companies I avoided in making my list.

1) Those who actually fall under US-jurisdiction because they are based or owned by a company in the USA.

More than often, I will stumble over a company that appears to be outside the USA, but later find they are owned by another corporation based inside the USA, and so they do fall under US-jurisdiction.

2) Those who voluntarily give up their sovereignty to the United States. The 2nd type, who voluntarily gives up their sovereignty in the way of US jurisdiction, have whole sections of their terms concerning US Laws and US based customers. If a fascist government says jump, these people will ask, how high?!

The current #Proton outage is even locking me out of my #ProtonPass. This is bad. One thing is not being able to check emails or to access cloud storage, another is not being able to access one’s own passwords!!!

I am seriously thinking about moving back to #KeePassXC, that served me so well for so many years (not just because of this particular event, but because it is a community-maintained, local-first software, much less prone to this kind of troubles)!

This is unacceptable, @protonprivacy.

@protonprivacy

Well, that explanation was disapointing. First, he deny and apology for nothing. And he miss the point of how much important that post was harmful from the privacy and security perspective.

The fact that he didn't see the importance and the link seems to tell us that he's not in sync with Proton mission anymore.

#TechTip for those who are creating a BitWarden account.

There is the ability to create a bitwarden.eu account, so the server is hosted in the EU and has all the benefits associated with that.

You have to select this at creation point, help link is here.

2022 when Proton restructured their company, some people were surprised with expanded accounts, but others (like myself), lost services. They prevented anyone from speaking out on their Facebook page and on their Subreddit on Reddit.

I had the old family plan, which allowed each member to have their own login. The space and services were evenly divided among the members. I paid 1 year in advance. They ended the family plan. 1 e-mail was converted to a premium account, 1 e-mail into a free account, and 1 e-mail simply vanished. No refund, because they claimed the 1 remaining premium was still providing (less than what I paid for).

Proton discontinued the family plan service, only to eventually offer it again (it is available, now). Which means they could have left people well enough alone. Their TOS (Terms of Services) says they can change things without notice, and they mean it.

It is not the 1st time Proton Mail has shown their true colors. Worse, people go there, often claiming "they're not Google" (or Microsoft), but that is exactly what Proton is trying to mimic. Your e-mail, VPN, cloud store, password manager, and now Proton Pay. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.

I'll stick with Tuta (
@Tutanota@mastodon.social ). They provide an e-mail and calendar, that's all. And they've been doing it for years.

@ElizabethLeeCo Frankly, the market isn't big, if you want FOSS and multiple platforms and cloud sync it is really #ProtonPass or #Bitwarden. I use Bitwarden (BTW haven't experienced any noticeable slowness…) because it lets me synchronize not only passwords but also other data (like card numbers) between all my devices (Linux/Windows/Android) and has quite advanced autofill features. KeePass[CD]X are certainly good from cryptographic POV, but you need to provide reliable synchronization yourself (see @pgronkievitz 's comment); the same holds for Password Store and Password Safe.
