Titmouse Portrait with Nut
Charlie lent a hand with my bird-watching this morning. He chose a spot in the yard that was just the right distance from the large post feeder to keep the pigeons at bay. The smaller birds, however, having grown accustomed to our behavior over time, showed no hesitation in coming closer. They feasted freely while the pigeons watched enviously from the roof.
I managed to snap a photo of this tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) caught red-handed—or perhaps red-beaked—with a piece of walnut in its beak. Since tufted titmice aren’t sexually dimorphic, it’s impossible to determine the bird’s gender just from this image. Honestly, I’d need to Google the finer details to even attempt figuring it out.
Tufted titmice are a favorite among a select group of bird enthusiasts. To celebrate these charming creatures, I’ve curated a special collection dedicated entirely to them in my photo gallery. Take a look!
