like the cosmic crisp isn't a great apple, this isn't a great cider. but also kind of like and yet moreso than the cosmic crisp, I think it's a cider that has an actual role. One _other than_ surviving shipping well.
it's supposed to be hot this week. if not this week, we're heading into august.
i bought a bottle. we'll see.
so after saying more or less all the above to the seattle cider rep and also saying that making a cider from it seemed fairly unlikely, i gave it a try.
it's the pilsner of the apple cider world. but it's a _pretty decent_ pilsner.
I don't mean that it tastes like a pilsner; it doesn't. I don't like beer. But I know some of the _roles_ of beer.
this cider is light, but in defiance of my expectations, it's not _empty_. it has a presence. it's the sort of cider you'd actively enjoy in the shade during a very hot day, probably after you've been doing something athletic.
seattle cider dropped a cosmic-crisp single variety cider, so i had a sample this weekend
my expectations were low because the cosmic crisp is what I think of as an adequate apple, but no better. it functions as an apple, it fulfills the role of apple, the texture is reliable and the flavour is acceptable. but there are many better - fuji and honeycrisp both come immediately to mind as similar but better cultivars not as durable in shipping.
(this isn't to condemn the cosmic crisp; the last apple to occupy its slot was the loathsome red delicious, a mealy, tasteless apple-shaped object which fulfilled the function of _looking_ like an apple, but not that of _being_ an apple. cosmic crisp is far superior.)

It's hit 30° in London and there is only one solution
@EvilCartyen Completely agree. I called one of the ciders I tasted something akin to a Loureiro (a Portuguese wine grape). It just happened to be made from apples. The structure and character of the cider made that comparison very appropriate.

And now for something completely different, "No. 139" Dry Cider (from Wölffer in the Hamptons, Long Island, NY). This is the white. They have others.
Memorial Day beckons.Welcome to summer. Convenient half-bottle size with a slightly tart, green-apple edge, just a touch of fizz and a crisp finish. This style is great for warm weather! That small size with a twist-off cap adds versatility. My box had inserts to carry a four-pack around. A case of 12 was about $50. 6.9% alc.

Recently Hood River’s #DoubleMountainBrewery announced its two newest releases in #beer and #cider, and I received a bottle of each: ClusterF#ck IPA, in the brewery’s From the Vault series, and Zora Hard Cider, a new addition to its seasonal ciders for 2025.
