Q: So, anything new? What'd you do today?

A: Oh, dug through menus in a new AV receiver to find its MAC addresses, configured my network DHCP server to give it a static address, and then wrote some iptables rules to keep that address from being able to reach outside the LAN. Pretty standard stuff.

Looking for a "DO NOT CONNECT THIS MACHINE TO THE INTERNET NO MATTER HOW MUCH IT NAGS" warning sign to print out.

Community is central to the #wellbeing of humankind

I like that #mastadon particularly @hoosiersocial feels more like an online #community.

I also can’t help but think about how the obstreperous internet is not a safe place for vulnerability.

The world should not have access what is sacred to us as individuals and communities.

What makes you feel #connected and #grounded in this world that feels so disconnected from our human nature?

Smart TVs are like “a digital Trojan Horse” in people’s homes

48-page report urges FTC, FCC to investigate connected TV industry #data #harvesting.

Unprecedented tracking techniques aimed at pleasing advertisers have resulted in #connected #TVs (CTVs) being a "privacy nightmare," according to Jeffrey Chester, report co-author and CDD executive director, resulting in calls for stronger regulation.

The 48-page report, "How TV Watches Us: Commercial Surveillance in the Streaming Era"
cites Ars Technica, other news publications, trade publications, blog posts, and statements from big players in streaming
—from #Amazon to #NBCUniversal and #Tubi, to #LG, #Samsung, and #Vizio.

It provides a detailed overview of the various ways that streaming services and streaming hardware target viewers in newfound ways that the CDD argues pose severe #privacy #risks.

The nonprofit composed the report as part of efforts to encourage regulation.

Today, the CDD sent letters to the FTC, Federal Communications Commission (FCC), California attorney general, and California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA), regarding its concerns.

Ars Technica · Smart TVs are like “a digital Trojan Horse” in people’s homesBy Scharon Harding

In the 1980s as railroads abandoned thousands of miles of track following deregulation,
Congress provided for “#railbanking,” seeking to preserve rail corridors while allowing for interim use as trails.

Today, there are nearly 26,000 miles of rail-trails in the U.S., according to RTC.

• More than $830 million in U.S. Department of Transportation funds announced last week under the ⭐️Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods ⭐️grant program went to #trails, #walking and a #biking #infrastructure, according to the Rails to Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit advocacy organization.

• Among the projects selected for the Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods program are at least four that will 🔸repurpose former railroad lines into trails.🔸

• Additional funding of nearly $45 million is now available under the ⭐️Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment ⭐️program for planning and construction of #connected #pedestrian and #bicycle #networks within communities or along transportation spines between communities, regions or states.

5/ in other words, a thing does not have to be literal to be true. I don't have to think there is an entity in the woods sending creatures for me to see, in order to feel that there is a principle of life, a force, an energy that may be seen and experienced in ways that speak to me. There doesn't have to be a concrete messenger for there to be a message that is meaningful. You can say it comes from my own mind, but it comes from my mind being #connected

@zimowski
First, you should put all of the #hashtags you're following in your #profile, and follow the people who regularly #toot those hashtags.
Next, follow the people whose toots are frequently boosted by the people you're following (hint: If you see a boosted toot, someone you're following boosted it).
Then, whenever you see a toot that you enjoy, be sure to #favorite, #boost, and #comment on it.
And finally, keep doing all of the above on an infinite loop until your network is large enough to keep you #informed, #connected, #entertained, etc.

Remember, there's #NoAlgorithm here to show you stuff that "it thinks" you might like. You have to #TakeControl of your own destiny here. Leveraging your #CommonInterests with others is a great way to immerse yourself in any new culture, even if you don't actually know anyone there yet. If you're #friendly, #curious, and #engage enthusiastically with people here, you'll find your network growing quickly before you know it.
