New discovery reveals that ocean #algae unexpectedly help cool the Earth phys.org/news/2024-06-discover #protists #microbes

Alternative #dimethylsulfoniopropionate #biosynthesis enzymes in diverse and abundant microorganisms nature.com/articles/s41564-024

"They identified the bloom-forming #Pelagophyceae algae as potentially abundant, important producers of a compound called #DMSP... this is the main source of a #climate active gas called #dimethylsulfide (#DMS), which is known as the smell of the seaside."

Weekend #Plankton #Factoid 🦐🦠

Did you know a gas, dimethylsulfide (DMS) produced from an algal molecule dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), can mitigate #ClimateChange? In lakes and oceans, in blooms of #phytoplankton, DMSP is converted to volitile #DMS gas under UV stress. This aerosol creates clouds, which reflect solar radiation (albedo). So DMS is an anti-greenhouse gas! 🌤

If you have been to the seashore and "smelled the sea", that is DMS. 👃

DIRECT MESSAGING

DMs on Mastodon work differently than on other platforms.

Graham Cluley, a well-respected British security blogger with a sharp sense of humor (and host of the Smashing Security podcast) has this to say:

“Imagine you are having a direct message conversation with someone on Mastodon about a sensitive subject.

Maybe George and Paul are bantering via direct message on Mastodon, and one of them says “I’ll tell you who’s a twit. That bloody @Ringo”

Well, because @Ringo has been mentioned in the chat, he now sees a copy of the message too. Ouch, that’s awkward.

This would be particularly dangerous if you were communicating with another Mastodon user to report abusive behaviour. Suddenly your abuser knows you are complaining about them.

Email doesn’t work like that. Twitter direct messages don’t work like that.

(Sorry Ringo for using your name in this example, Peace and Love man!)”

grahamcluley.com/mastodon-what

Marcus Hutchins pointed out -- in his excellent overview “A Twitter User's Guide to Mastodon”:

“Something to also be wary of is similar to how Twitter staff can read your DMs, so can Mastodon instance staff. If you send a DM to someone on another instance, both the staff on the sending and receiving instance could read your message if they wanted to. Just like on any social media platform, I do not advise using DMs to share sensitive information. Use DMs for normal discussions, or exchanging contacts. Any sensitive information should be sent via an End-to-end encrypted messaging app like Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram, or Wire.”

Question for #DMs-

What is the in-universe justification for different levels of healing potion?

Take d&d- a commoner has 4hp, and a common healing potion heals 4hp minimum, which means it's enough to heal someone at the brink of death completely from terrible injury.

HP is an abstraction. It doesn't exist in-universe.

Why, then, do heroes receive so much less from them? Why would anyone make better healing potions, since a common one is clearly enough for anyone?

Replied in thread

@ernie @scottmiller42 I'm going to be that guy who joined Mastodon a month ago and now acts like a #fediverse savant, but are there other protocols in the fediverse that are 'better' at #DMs? I got the feeling the 'verse was a collection of tools, all of which strive to do one thing well and then talk to each other to make magic happen. Not quite what the Twitter experience is, but similar.

Or am I making that all up?

The intro to our special issue "Dynamics of Policy Change" in #dms - der moderne staat is online!

We (with Sandra Plümer) take a processual analytical perspective to reconsider different concepts of #PolicyChange and #transformation.

Building on the issue's contributions, we derive modes and qualities of policy change as a combination of factors for a better understanding of policy change and stability.

A closer look will follow soon.

Thinking of quitting #Twitter? Here's the right way to do it

1. Download #Archive of yr data
► Settings > Settings & Support > Settings & Privacy > Your Account > Download archive

2. #Lockdown yr Tweets
► In protected mode your tweets won't be searchable off the platform. Only existing followers can see them

3. Remove #DMs by clicking to right of thread & selecting Delete conversation. NB this only deletes it from yr side.
