Alien Ant!
Ant-mimicking Treehopper (Cyphonia clavata) From the side, this looks just like an ant. From above, it looks like an alien. I could have spent all day with this thing. Definitely one of the highlights of my trip.
Yesterday, I observed an insect I had never encountered before. I captured an image of it and uploaded it to iNaturalist. It is called Zelus renardii. Interestingly, this turned out to be one of the earliest documented sightings of this species in Germany, and quite possibly the first observation of it in its nymphal form in Germany.
This particular insect is native to North America and has already established itself in the Mediterranean region of Europe. It appears to be gradually moving northward as the climate becomes warmer. Whether it will be invasive / problematic remains to be seen.
The firebugs (_Pyrrhocoris apterus_) proliferate as the hollyhocks go to seed.
Look for them in large aggregations around plants from the family Malvaceae, like mallows, cheeseweed, hollyhocks, linden trees, etc.
Calocoris roseomaculatus on chamomile. This plant bug of the Miridae family has no common name.
A cinnamon bug (#Corizus hyoscyami) on a blade of grass
These flashy bugs are supposed to smell of cinnamon, but it must be very faint as I couldn't smell anything.
