Why?
Because life on Earth is chemically wild, and most people never see it.
This bot showcases the hidden chemodiversity of nature — and how open data can make it visible.
It’s not just a daily curiosity — it’s an invitation.
If you see something that needs correcting, you can help improve https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/.
If you’re a researcher, this is a gateway into the LOTUS Initiative (https://lotus.nprod.net/)
@daily_lotus is a bot on a mission:
Every day, it toots a real-world natural product — a molecule found in plants,
fungi,
animals, or
bacteria — straight from the depths of Wikidata.
Each post includes:
the molecule's name and structure,
a pic of the organism it was found in,
a reference to the scientific publication documenting the occurrence .

My painting, "Capybara Under the Lotuses"! Lotuses are some of my favorite plants, love their flowers and leaves!
I promised @greg_harvey that I would do the Lotus Elan +2S, and here it is. Like the recently featured Lotus Cortinas, this used Lotus’ Ford-derived twin-cam engine. The +2 was a 2+2 four-seater, quite different to the standard Elan - perhaps working with Ford on Cortina saloons gave Lotus the idea of doing its own car with a pair of extra seats. This +2S was snapped at the NEC Classic Car Show, 2024, and has been extensively restored (see list).
Today, we’re back in the 1960s with Lotus. This is the Mk1 version of the Ford Cortina Lotus (usually referred to as the Lotus Cortina), seen here at last year’s NEC Classic Car Show. The Mk1 was introduced in 1963. The Lotus treatment included a special twin-cam version of the Ford Kent engine, bodywork strengthening and a more sophisticated suspension set-up than the standard Ford Cortina. Something of a legend. More in a similar vein tomorrow.
Yesterday I posted a pre-Geely Volvo, the first-generation S80. Today, we’re looking at a pre-Geely Lotus, the original Europa, first launched in the sixties. I saw this 1969 S2 model at the NEC Classic Car Show last year. The photographs show how Lotus borrowed the engine and gearbox from the Renault 16 for a mid-engined layout.

Exotique avec cette fleur de lotus balinoise...
Today we’re sticking with Lotus but returning to the theme of a few days ago: British EVs. Well I say British, but this, the Lotus Elitre electric SUV, is actually built in China. Handsome but heavy - partly because it carries an enormous 112 kWh battery pack. The weight is offset by 610 PS of power. That’s on the base version. The R model has a staggering 918 PS. Snapped at the SMMT’s Northern test day last year. White or green? The choice is yours.
Today, another mention for @icemanfr75 who pointed out that the designer of the Lightning GT I featured a week ago (Daniel Durrant, if I am interpreting Wikipedia correctly) was also responsible for the Lotus Emira, launched in 2021. I caught up with this one at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Northern test day for journalists, held at Wetherby Racecourse last September.
