Did a VHF only activation of Mt Umunhum, W6/CC-052, this morning on my run. Got QSOs on 2m FM, CW, and SSB, and three summit to summit contacts.

My #Quansheng UVK5 (99) arived today. for some reason, even if i set the voice to english, it does not talk, only beeping. and, menu options are up to 49 only. anyone knows the sulusion to make this talk? #DY1AJD #Blind #BlindHam #Radio #AmateurRadio #HamRadio #UVK5
New #Quansheng announced.
10m/6m/2m/70cm Quadband with 0.5 - 1160MHz wide receive. AMF/FM/SSB receive and likely only FM TX, like usual.
Also 6m/2m/70cm tribander with the same wide RX.
Sadly no #23cm even on receive.
Will be interesting to see what price point these end up on.

My buddy Kevin gave me a #Realistic #DX440 in exchange for a #Quansheng #UVK5 radio. Was able to get the Denver Atomic clock no problem.
So, if I am not mistaken, there are basically two firmwares for the #quansheng #UVK5 which can #TX on simulated #SSB: KD8CEC's uvk5cec and IU0IJV's IJV. In the last case, I did contact IU0IJV to ask him (he said, long ago, that he might release it when he completed the development). Both of them have released binaries with this capability but no source code for them. This is quite unfortunate. What's the deal with developing and not showing? Are they engaging in business with #Quansheng ?
Doing some research here in firmware for the #quansheng #UVK5 radios from a #developer point of view.
I am interested to learn how these radios actually implement modes like #ssb #CW and even #sstv
Who knows what firmware projects for this radio are #opensource and do publish their #sourcecode so we can learn how these firmware (and therefor these radios) work internally?
So now, the question. Is there any non-#IJV free/open-source firmware for the #quansheng that allows "SSB" (actually some kind of DSB) transmission on 2m and 70 cm?
Unfortunately, even after me requesting him to release the source, the author of the #IJV firmware for the #quansheng UV-K5 has decided to release it with a non-free/closed source firmware licence. I find this so un-ham.
#quansheng #uvk5 question. Is there a firmware besides IJV that allows SSB transmission? Even after contacting IU0IJV and asking him to release the source code, he hasn't yet. But I'd rather use free/open-source firmware.

BTW, the SSB TX firmware does not do SSB TX; not even DSB TX. What it does is FM with TX power regulated by voice. It sounds much better when received in FM than when received in SSB. It's a nice energy-saving trick, by the way.
I see lots of firmwares that are used to do wacky things with the #quansheng #uvk5 but I don't see source code or actual documentation describing how they were designed. Why does this happen?
Santa either brought me 2 kilos of mysterious white powder, or my four #Quansheng #UVK5 #HamRadios just arrived for #Xmas Only customs and my #Cat know for sure right now. Either will make for a fun time. #Lacey #CatsOfMastodon #Caturday
Can't wait to play with one. #HamRadio #Quansheng #UVK5
My #Quansheng UV-K5 goes back to the box. RX is very bad, no matter the antenna (my son and I did some RX testing yesterday away from city noise). Any strong signal somewhere will deafen it. AM is fake. Yes, you can flush any firmware, etc., but the radio is even worse than a #Baofeng #uv5r . Fortunately I just invested 15€ on it.
