🆕 blog! “Can you meaningfully measure how environmentally friendly a website is?”

Think global; act local. That's the mantra, right? I can't stop coal plants belching out suffocating pollutants, but can I ensure my website is as environmentally friendly as possible?

There are several services which claim…

Non-EU sites giving you this welcome ...

That "legal reason" argument... is bul***t

Their legal reasons is that they are not allowed to track you without your knowledge and your consent. And that is why they block you when you're visiting the site from EU. Because #GDPR requires sites to notify you of such possibilities.

The solution is simple: DON'T TRACK!

But there's no money in that. And if they had allowed you to visit and ignore GDPR they fear the EU would chase them down and give them a solid fine.

So if they can't earn money on you or they risk getting a fine when you visit their site, they rather tells you to «F*** of*!» and go somewhere else.

That's how valuable the tracking is for them. And it gives you nothing back.

So "legal reasons" .... yeah, right!

Every once in a while, I read my old blog posts that link to other articles or blogs. 99% of those sites are now offline or show a domain-for-sale page. It kind of makes me sad. Most of my own websites are still online after 20+ years. I wonder why they gave up.

That being said, this instance will be online forever - I'll make sure of it. Even after my passing, I want it to live on. My websites have survived even when hosting companies went bankrupt, and so will this instance.

I'm looking to migrate our website domains to services not owned by google/squarespace, and our web host to something cheaper than bluehost.

It's just a simple wordpress website for a card game, Penguinslap.com. We don't really get any traffic at all. Very occasionally we make a sale, and those links redirect to a PayPal site.

Any suggestions?

"In an age of information overload & an increasingly commercialized web, #artists of all types are the people to help. Artists can think expansively about what a #website can be. Each #artist should create their own space on the web, for a website is an individual act of collective ambition." — Laurel Schwulst

A simple development question for those experienced with building static websites from generative tools. Given these 3 major options to select from, do you have a preference?

Needs to be robust, flexible, as bulletproof as possible, secure, and can be easily maintained.

today is officially *THREE* weeks until the submission deadline for Good Internet magazine!

Good Internet launches in May 2025. it's a volunteer-run, not-for-profit print and digital quarterly magazine for personal website owners and those interested in using the internet as a means of self-expression, art, and recreation.

🔍 we're looking for 1,500-4,000 word articles about anything related to that!

you could write about:

* #internet history
* personal #websites
* #accessibility on the #indieweb
* finding inspiration for a #blog
* #webdesign trends
* running from the #enshittification of the #web
* lessons or post-mortems from #webdev projects
* news or overviews of #opensource projects

if it relates to hobbies on "this side of the web," whether you call it the #smallweb or indieweb, we probably want to run it!

you can have your article as low-media (meaning only text and images) or interactive, where you code an entire webpage to help tell your story.

if you're interested in learning more, you can sign up for our email list for when we launch or you can check the submission guidelines @ goodinternetmagazine.com!

(please boost if you can! <3)

Good InternetGood InternetA magazine for the non-corporate web, using code as an art medium, and web development enthusiasm of hobbyists and professionals alike.

boosting this to remind folks that the deadline for this is march 15, just shy of a month!

if you like #writing about the #internet, #enshittification, taking back our digital power by creating #websites, #blogs or #blogging (in the meta way!), and/or #coding and #webdev, please consider writing or coding for GOOD INTERNET magazine:

tilde.zonealexandra (@xandra@tilde.zone)this will likely be a recurring reminder as the weeks go by, but i'm so excited about this project. i have to share! (this is the first time i've been nervous to announce something on this side of the web!) i'm combining my 10 years of journalism experience with my love for the #indieweb by launching GOOD INTERNET, a regular periodical magazine in both print and digital formats. and this is a non-profit, completely independent endeavor! https://goodinternetmagazine.com/ ultimately, Good Internet will cover a lot of different aspects of the small web: unplugging from the corporate web, fighting #enshittification, migrating from data-harvesting corpo social media, creating your own personal website, using code and website-building as an art form, federation, and creating websites for fun. it will be approachable for beginners and enjoyable for seasoned indie web travelers! the #smallweb can be hard to keep up with if you aren't "plugged in," especially if you want to find other hobby website owners, folks coding for fun, weird web projects, or artists taking back their digital ownership. it's overdue that this side of the web has an analog publication! having a central publication about the decentralized parts of the personal web makes me even more excited to share this hobby with those who might not even know about it--all within beautiful, high-res, high-quality pages. the idea here is to have a physical celebration of this hobby in addition to being informative, helpful, and accessible. consider signing up for email notifications when we launch the first issue in may 2025: https://goodinternetmagazine.com (if you're interested in #writing an article or op-ed about this side of the web/personal websites, coding an interactive article, or want to know what that even means, send an email to hello@goodinternetmagazine.com! taking pitches for may 2025!) #internet #socialmedia #personalwebsites #blogging #blog #print #magazine #writer #technology #tech #coding #programming #html #webdev #webdesign #web #smalltech #css #html #dev #web

As previous post I’m in the last few days of moving about 60 #websites to a new server. Today was meant to be the last day, moving the main domain over. It went utterly tits up.

Set up the main domain and its subs on the new server, move all files over, then updated the DNS. 10mins later the server hit max load with swap file at 99.8%!

Hours trying to work out the issue found nothing, eventually reverted all DNS. Tomorrow I’ll start changing DNS entries one at a time.

The caller emailed as the voicemail said she would, and the email is MUCH more sales pitch. "Our monitoring system flagged malware and/or vulnerabilities... this can result in serious risks like... we specialize in identifying and resolving..."

LOL, no.

Any suggestions for non-scammy webhosts, especially not in the US? I currently use self-hosted WordPress for my site, but have considered alternatives.

As the #OrangeHitler Administration orders gov't #websites to "#scrub 27 #BannedWords" from all websites...

...I'd like to remind everyone that the job of "Winston Smith" in the novel "1984" was to remove words from the English #language.

The People were told it was to "streamline" language, but in fact, it was a means of CONTROL, b/c when people lack the words to express themselves, they are easier to control. #Fascism #FascistInChief
