Rebel Hearts is a hidden gem. It tells the story of the radical Catholic nuns in 1960s Los Angeles whose faith, defiance and activism turned the Church upside-down. They marched at Selma with MLK and they still fight for social justice today. Their story is incredible and it will fill you and your students with hope and fire. 4/n

Nearly 1700 years ago, in Nicea in 325, was held the First "Ecumenical Council".

When was the last time a new source was discovered about what was going on?…

Well, I don't know about before, but the last time was in 2019 when @CamilleGerzaguet and I edited, translated and studied Bishop Timothy's “Letter on Easter”, i.e. when and why Christians should celebrate it.

And these days you can get this with 50% off:

In fact, since Timothy certainly wrote his letter in Greek,

we hypothetized that the “protopaschites” translated it into Latin during Nicea,

in an attempt to explain the arguments to the (few) Latin deputies and try and gain their support.

That could explain why traces of the Latin text can be found in the works of several Latin 4th-century Fathers,

mostly Gregory of Elvira (modern Granada, Spain) and Augustine.

The text I discovered is written in Latin and preserved in a Ninth-century manuscript,

but it is engaging in several arguments regarding the date of Easter

that were happening specifically in the East around the time of Nicea,

and it is engaging them in a way that tells us Nicea most probably did not happen yet.

The “protopaschites” also “lost” the battle on Easter date at Nicea,

and Timothy does not seem aware of that.

Today at #OxfordPatristics (plenary session), Camille Gerzaguet @CamilleGerzaguet will give an update on the

“Liber Timothei episcopi de Pascha”

a text I discovered and whose first ever edition we published together in 2019.

It's a previously unknown text written by a previously unknown author, in Anatolia, shortly before Nicea (325).

It's the only known text written by one of the people that heresiologists later called "protopaschites".

Peter Randolph was a Baptist minister. In his autobiography, he quotes Thomas Jefferson’s equation, the injustice of slavery + the justice of God = fearful times for the nation.

Jefferson is rightly held accountable for his complicity in slavery. It is fascinating however that many abolitionists ended up using his words to bolster their fight.

How can you work against injustices that would break the heart of a just God?

A #CradleCatholic. A #LapsedCatholic? I did all the stuff - Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation. At around 4 years old, the church kicked out my mom & by extension, my family. I explored other practices & faiths, & I wanted to not convert to a religion or practice I had not been born to or wasn't otherwise ancestrally connected. Long story short, decades later, a pandemic, & a few ends of the world here I am. I am listening. Let's see where all this leads. #EarlyChurch #ChurchHistory #Theosis

A #CradleCatholic. A #LapsedCatholic? As a wee lad, I did all the stuff - Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation. I was born here all my life. When I was around four years old, the church kicked out my mom and, by extension, my family. An #ExcludedCatholic? I explored other practices and faiths, #meditation, #yoga, #Buddhism, and all the things. I wanted to not convert to a religion or practice that I had not been born to or wasn't otherwise ancestrally connected. I explored Protestant fellowships but soon began seeking "the deeper things" back in the lives of saints. This led to a deep dive into the #EarlyChurch Fathers and early #ChurchHistory. Entering the #OrthodoxChurch, I lived in several monasteries and wandered around the US like the guy in Way of a Pilgrim. I was ultimately drawn to #Theosis and the #PrayerOfTheHeart, sometimes called the #JesusPrayer. That church became tedious as well. Long story short, decades later, a pandemic, and a few ends of the world here I am. I recently stumbled across a podcast called the #PopeFrancisGeneration. I'm intrigued. I am listening. Let's see where my current studies lead.
