Itty-bitty leaf beetle on the brink.
Another eight-spotted skimmer seen near Green Lake in Seattle. Love these dragonflies!
Now *that's* what I call a defensive posture
Or should that be posterior?
The spiky arse on this little fly is remarkable – it's a Tachina ferox, also known as Nowickia ferox.
In German, it's a Schwarzfühler Borstenfliege or roughly "black antenna bristle fly".
It was flying around too quickly to get a definitive single shot, but between the four photos, you'll get the idea

A friendly neighbor
I think this is Melissodes bimaculatus, a local solitary bee, and a male given the very long antennae. All around a very good bee!
Une coccinelle cherche des pucerons dans le fond d'une feuille tordue...
No time earlier in the day & very little light left in the evening, so not much chance to see who was around in the garden
But revisiting a subject from ten days ago or so, here's a not very sharp picture of a ferruginous bee-grabber fly (Sicus ferrugineus) from above.
The sprinkling of small pink flowers on its head somehow conjures up a bridesmaid ... or maybe that's just me

I've been experimenting with extension tubes to see what I can accomplish and what I think of #MacroPhotography. It's wild the worlds that exist on this scale that you never had a clue about.

Snug as a bug in a rose mallow bud!
Bit cold this July morning. Found this (likely) 2-spotted longhorn bee a bit sleepy/groggy in the rose mallow where it decided to bed down.
How 'bout that black and pink though?!
The recent rains brought out a beautiful Dog Vomit Slime Mold (Fuligo septica) munching on a decomposing log in the garden.
The German name "Gelbe Lohblüte" translates to "Flowers of Tan" and sounds more pleasant .
I'm in the #macrophotography foothills.. I guess I now need to go write my own focus-stacker...
I finally started uploading some of my photos to wikipedia as CC-by-SA. Makes it so much easier to find them again when I need them.
This is a star worm from the family Rhagopthalmidae. It looks like a tiny subway train crawling on the forest floor.
Took this with my cheap 25mm 7Artisans manual lens, because the wide apeture could capture the dim bioluminescence. I had a fill light to the right so there is a glimpse of what the animal actually looks like.

Sea Holly (Eryngium) from the garden.
The agave weevil (Scyphophorus acupunctatus) is big, relative to most weevils. The larvae--called nixtamal worms--are evidently big enough to eat. What better way to get rid of your agave crop's pests than to eat them! There's a fascinating story about nixtamal worms here:

I found this one crossing the hiking trail at Black Mesa State Park in far, far western Oklahoma. The #biodiversity at this park was stunning.
Primus inter pares
My favourite butterfly of the summer so far – a common blue (Polyommatus icarus) in the garden today
The black & white fringed blue topside means it's a male – the females have a range of browns & blues, with orange edge spots. The underside is pretty as well.
Pictures aren't super-sharp – I was struggling to keep my footing in a steep location, trying to get closer

for national snake day i will present the most recent snake i photo'd (in early June)
but i think it's a US holiday & this is a Costa Rica snake so don't expect to meet this character in every passing bush...

Another bug for you, this time a random shield bug that I can't identify properly, partly because I only have a shot of its underside.
But still pretty & worth sharing.
If anyone can ID it from just this angle, please let me know.
