The investment in a upgradable unit (e.g. #prusa) can make sense.

Tbf, when you say #Prusa Loyalists. I'm not saying you're wrong; but I do feel like there's a lot of valid reasons why someone would prefer buying a prusa machine. They're the most open source 3D printing company around. They provide insanely long firmware updates. The customer support is excellent. It's built in Europe. They're upgradeable.
All of these things have costs associated with them. And for a lot of people including myself, that's a cost i'm willing to pay

@3dprinting It finished! And one of these hearts will make a very nice gift.
56 hours all told.
No further interventions needed today.
My MMU has done a lifetime total of 10,508 filament changes now. 1,678 of them in this print.
@3dprinting I adjusted the height of the FINDA (MMU filament sensor) at 50% complete, and it hasn't needed intervention since. (Knock on woodfill PLA.)
Been battling with the new #prusa printer - never quite happy with the print quality using Prusament filament with Prusa Slicer and the correct Prusament profile.
After having fiddled with setting after setting, it turned out it was all down to retraction and the incredibly optimistic setting in the profile. Final tweak and print quality is up where I'd expect it.
If anyone wants to have a go at 3D Printing him, my Star Wars Pit Droid is now live on #printables ! (I would appreciate a boost if you can spare it ) :)

800 lines of #nix later and I have successfully beefed up our #3dPrinting infrastructure at work @umphy with one #RaspberryPi 4:
· a https://gethomepage.dev landing page
· three fullHD webcams, one for each printer, with current filament visible
· a smart #Tasmota multiplug to remotely power off a printer in case of a problem/hangup
· #OctoPrint for the Prusa MK3S, #PrusaLink by the #PrusaMINIs
· all password-protected and certs from #LetsEncrypt
I just tried the #prusa app for #android and for any #blind #3dprinting folks out there, it works just as well as the iPhone and iPad version does. You are able to access the printables section well enough and the headings are clearly labeled and such. It is surprising what you can do with an app for your prints. You don't even need your computer anymore it seems. Whatever they did, they focused some of their resources on accessibility which is very refreshing and convenient for any blind folks who may want to start printing. A very good showing from Prusa and their quality software. It makes me want to consider a prusa printer all the more as the software is half the battle.
Hey #3dprinting #prusa folks, does anyone have any idea what's going on with this benchy? This is my first attempt at printing with ASA (polymaker polylite) on a mk4s. I've tried the standard prusament ASA profile (which others online have had success with) as well as the generic ABS profile and both show this really strange distinctive diagonal hatching
Pop quiz: There's a costume party in 2 hours, and all you have is a pair of cat ears and a 3D printer. What do you do?
We were invited to a birthday party over the weekend, and the hostess wanted everyone to come in "party animal" costumes, even if you "just throw on those old black cat ears you got for Halloween".
@llorenzin and I would be masking, since the party would be a bunch people in a small apartment, and I got to thinking about what I could do to add to those "old black cat ears" from the Halloween box...
One of my protective masks has a SIP valve for drinking using a small straw. While out running on Friday, I thought about how could replace the SIP cover with one of my own design, adding an arch that could be used to hold some pipe cleaners as whiskers.
We ended up with a very busy Saturday, but with a couple hours to go before the party, I pulled out my calipers, pulled up Tinkercad, and threw together a simple design for a cover with an arch (made of just 3 basic geometric shapes plus cutouts).
My first two prints failed because I didn't slice it with supports under the arch, and the "arch" ended up as a big ugly glob of plastic. Doh! After re-slicing with supports, it printed great. The fit over the SIP valve was good, and it worked just the way I had hoped! Yay!

Spend the weekend upgrading my Prusa Mk3S+ to a Mk3.5S. While I was at it, I also swapped out all the accent pieces for my favorite color.
As is tradition, my first print was a Benchy.
@emily_s My wife has a cricut.
I've used it a handful of times. The cloud software that it forced upon it is so limited and remedial that I ended up using #Inkscape to create what I wanted (racing number roundels for the cars).
It was a pain to import the Inkscape files but it worked well enough. IIRC I still had to use their cheesey software to set up the layering properly but it worked. Everything useful in the software is a subscription/purchase as well. Double plus evil IMO.
This was last winter. I'd expect the software has been more downgraded since then - wouldn't be surprised if you can't do that any more - or have to pay for it on an import by import basis.
Yep, won't buy another #cricut
I was lamenting that I bought a #Prusa XL after my buddy bought a similar #Bambu that was considerably cheaper. After this Bambu BS I have no regrets.
As the #BambuLab users are slowly waking up to what https://blog.bambulab.com/firmware-update-introducing-new-authorization-control-system-2/ means, it's a good time to remind everyone that the writing has been on the wall from day one.
It's not a "told you so", mind. It's a "this will continue and get worse". #Bambu will continue to tighten the ratchet.
#Prusa is far from perfect, but they deliver reliable #3dprinting based on open source software at an acceptable cost.
And if you missed it: they allow you to maintain warranty with custom firmware again.
**3D Printer Recommendations Needed!**
I’m diving into the world of additive manufacturing and need your help!
I’m looking for an inexpensive 3D printer (under $500) that’s perfect for a free and open-source software (FOSS) enthusiast like me.
Here are my criteria:
- **Budget:** Under $500
- **User-Friendly:** Easier to start with than a Voron 2.4
- **Hacking-Friendly:** I’d love the ability to tinker and customize!
What 3D printer would you recommend for someone just starting out? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments! Your insights will help me make the right choice. Thank you!
