New blog post for #fileformatfriday - #PDF Quality assessment for #digitisation batches with #Python, #PyMuPDF and #Pillow. This introduces the new #Pdfquad tool, which might be useful for others as well:
The problem with most of what #darzi proposes is that it is eminently sensible but profoundly unexciting - and offers little opportunity for #grift . #publichealth and #preventative measures work well but do not attract support from influential people - unlike #digitisation which tis seen as a 'magic bullet' and has been so for at least a quarter of a century ! The temptation will be to throw effort and money into #digitisation and pay lip service at best to the other stuff.
A reminder about this useful paper from @cneud et al: A survey of OCR evaluation tools and metrics

How can we make digitalisation sustainable?
The Berlin group of the FSFE wants to show an answer to this question at the Umweltfestival 2024 together with @bitsundbaeume_berlin and @be4foss . Come to our stand to learn more about the sustainable use of computers with Free Software. We will also have information about Upcycling Android, Public Money, Public Code and the Fediverse at our booth.
We will be at the Straße des 17. Juni between Siegessäule and Brandenburger Tor on April 28th from 11am to 7pm. Come by and talk to us about Free Software!

Any Audio Cultures researchers interested in putting a panel together for @AoIR ?
@overholt Richard Ovenden wrote on 21 Dec that "Destroying historical wills is foolhardy and short-sighted". Glad to see strong support in value-added comments both in the FT (where there are now 60 comments online, v 3 in the copy archived soon after publication at https://archive.is/axWT4), & on birdchan (https://nitter.net/richove/status/1737836723676254675). Let's hope for a rethink!

Publishing academic research in Open Access makes such a difference in who is able to engage with and benefit from it. Our Palgrave Handbook of Digital Russia Studies just hit 250k accesses - needless to say we would never have sold that many (expensive) copies...
