I wish there would have been retail software on 8 inch disks. These disks and disk drives are legendary! They always make me think of the "War Games" movie.

Source code for my games is now available on my web site. Just go to any game's web page, and the source code will be available among the downloads as a ZIP. There's a README.md in each one for compilation instructions. http://dos.cyningstan.org.uk/ #gamedev #ibmpc #msdos #cga
Lesser known but awesome DOS software (part 2):
PED - Pliable Editor (1.5)
via @internetarchive : https://archive.org/details/PED15_ZIP
* Esc menu hotkey
* Status bar with clock
* Reasonably configurable
Above average functionality and seemless context switching; a good compromise between hotkey and menu-based editing.
Presumably written in 1988, this is a programming editor ahead of its time.
Lesser known but awesome DOS software (part 1):
3DMenu Plus (1.0)
via @internetarchive : https://archive.org/details/3DMENUPLUSDOS
* Nine item, four level configurable menu
* Clever internal and external design
* Makes good use of screen estate
I wish I had this smooth and intuitive terminal menu and program starter back in the day. This software from 1989 can teach modern user interfaces quite a lot in terms of usability.
During beta testing of The #ChambersBeneath, silentcrystaltears sent me this screenshot of the game running on an #ibmpc portable (model 5155). That gorgeous amber screen is a monochrome composite #cga CRT. #msdos

Fun fact... Microsoft's Flight Simulator v2.13 is actually bootable straight from BIOS, but you can also run it though DOS. It doesn't have a full FAT12 file system, but uses a small 59 Bytes pseudo executable. Such a precious artifact!
Tonight, thanks to @Telev, I finally got to take a look at a truly ancient release of Microsoft's Flight Simulator for the IBM PC. This is version 2.13 from 1985. It comes on a copy protected, single sided 5.25inch floppy disk. Let's just say it looks stunning!
P.S. Here it is on the Internet Archive:

Have fun!
The #ChambersBeneath is out today! Delve into the dungeons to battle monsters, gather loot, and search for an important treasure for the ruler of the city. Runs on the original IBM PC and compatibles, on DOSBox, and on Windows. https://cyningstan.itch.io/the-chambers-beneath #ibmpc #msdos #cga
"A passionate enthusiast has just built an entire processor—yes, not a development board, not a microcontroller, but a full-on, instruction-capable, memory-addressing CPU using nothing but old memory chips and logic components from the 8-bit era."

I wonder how differently #retrocomputing history would have gone if #Microsoft had developed a 32-bit multitasking #MSDOS.
#Windows certainly would have been different if it ran on top of such a thing.
There is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS-DOS_4.0_(multitasking) but it's not 32-bit, and good luck running multiple programs with only 640kB of memory.
I pushed an update to #DOStodon (the #Mastodon client for MS-DOS):
- Updated #curl to 8.14.1
- Updated #mbedTLS to 3.6.4
- Enabled HTTP 3xx redirections
Grab it at https://github.com/SuperIlu/DOStodon
Screenshot is showing both, the DOS ( @DOSBox_Staging ) and the the win32 version (Win10).
Here is The #ChambersBeneath running on a Book 8088, badly photographed. Like my other games, it has a command line option to invoke the default CGA nostalgia palette, which I used because brown on this screen appears as bright orange. #msdos #cga
