Really nice piece on the misuse or contradictory use -- contranym -- of #performative

'Performative' means an utterance or speech act which effects change in the world. Like the words 'I do' spoken in context of wedding. Before saying it, you were not married, then you were. Nothing happened but everything changed!

💯 Annoying that the way it's used now undermines speech act theory, not to mention gender performativity.

DEI initiatives were all #performative #bullshit anyway. Really heavy on crafting a public image, with plenty of internal and external #propaganda and #marketing. #Target is not interested in actually supporting marginalized communities, just increasing profits.

The annual #pride stuff was the epitome of it. They only sold Pride goods in June but never year round. When right wingers put pressure on them for it, they folded like empty soda cans in a 24 ton hydraulic press.

In all seriousness, where would we be without #writers? The fight they have been putting up, not just now against #AI, but against the #executives of #Hollywood in general is a David v Goliath type situation.

The #startrek #ds9 writers for instance pushed the envelope for representation long before Disney's #performative #pinkwashing. They were on the front lines, took losses and wins, while people were blissfully unaware of their struggle.

Trump & his attys haven’t been suddenly forced into an exigent situation.

Judge #Engoron & his staff (incl’g his #clerk) have been adjudicating the Trump #civil #law #financial #fraud case for >3 yrs.

But Sen Rick Scott (R-FL) joined 2 other #GOP senators in pushing legislation that would prevent the #Palestinian #humanitarian funds from being spent until the president “certifies to the appropriate congressional committees” that the money can be spent w/o benefiting #Hamas or other #terrorist groups, among other restrictions.

#Biden addressed this every time he spoke about the aid package today.

This is #performative #extortion at the expense of innocent lives by the #Republicans.
