#SanFrancisco Supervisors vote 9 - 2 to approve overtime funding for SFPD because #PublicSafety (even though SFPD overtime influenced by the timecard version of testilying) And SFPD Public Safety concerns don't seem to include traffic enforcement, even though hazardous driving killed more people than homicides last year. (Curious how the property damage and injuries compare)

#SFMTA slow walks traffic safety actions because ???? even though they have evidence from their own projects of specific actions that reduce collisions, injury and death.

I walk a lot - and I see near miss traffic incidents several times a week. I know what poses the biggest risks to me.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (#AJC) in #Atlanta: This murder-by-car of a human (I'm not going to use the bullshit passive voice and "pedestrian" on this one) was completely avoidable.

How so?

There used to be a "shared street" setup on Peachtree Street in Atlanta where the outer lanes of the street were converted to an outdoor sitting area, and the road section for cars was a single-lane in each direction. Traffic slowed down, and the area was more safe for all street users.

But, alas, the property owner of the surrounding buildings and the hotel nearby pitched a fit, claiming various bs excuses like "it took more time to get to the interstate" and "ambulances will be delayed" and so on.

Then, that property owner (Bowers) used his money/power/influence in the General Assembly (Georgia's state legislature) to threaten to ban any future "complete streets" if the shared street wasn't torn down. He bullied the mayor into doing it, and the rest is history.

Source: I helped lead a protest against the tearing down of the shared street. It was awesome, inspiring, and ultimately made no f-ing difference apparently.

And now a man is dead because some asshole property owner thought, rather ironically, that an ambulance would get stuck to pick up a patient. Oh, and he may be a few minutes late getting home.

Kudos to the AJC for reminding people of the history of this.

Merri-bek council has started a trial closure of Barrow St at Harding St, Coburg.

The closure is to calm traffic on the street to make is safer for people on bikes and children that attend the nearby school.

The budget for this treatment was about $100K.

Modal filters like this are the cheapest way to provide good cycling infrastructure. Modal filters are also less controversial and more likely to be accepted by residents because they generally don't require removing parking spaces and provide amenity to the residents directly by providing a calmer, safer and quieter street. Modal filters can also provide space for 'pocket parks' in the street to provide a common place for people in the street to gather improving access to community.

"Endorsed by the U.S. Department of Transportation and recognized in federal law, the Urban Bikeway Design Guide is used by hundreds of municipalities, state DOTs, and regional agencies across the U.S. and Canada to design streets that are safe and accessible for people biking."

National Association of City Transportation Officials · NACTO Launches New Urban Bikeway Design Guide for the Next Generation of Innovative Cycling InfrastructureNACTO launched the revised edition of the Urban Bikeway Design Guide, updated for the first time in a decade.

"If we look at cities anywhere in the world, San Francisco is needing to do some catch-up in basic walkability, bikeability, street safety….We need to decarbonize the transportation sector as rapidly as we can....In order to make sure everyone can still drive when they need to drive, ironically, we must do more to make transit faster, more frequent and more reliable, and to make walking and biking safer.”—Jeffrey Tumlin, outgoing director of San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency transittalent.com/articles/ind
