21 million screenshots in one open bucket.

Workplace surveillance system #WorkComposer is under fire this week, for storing sensitive data with ZERO #security. The hapless firm saved more than 21 million screenshots from 200,000 users’ work PC screens—and popped them in an open #AmazonWebServices #S3 bucket.

Hackers could have easily stolen company secrets—and personal ones, too. In #SBBlogwatch, we can’t quite believe it.

“Amazon Is Investing in AI-Assisted Apartheid in Palestine”

by Ahmed Ibsais in @jacobinfeed@mastodon.social

“Since 2014, Amazon has been pouring billions into Israel, contributing to illegal settlement programs and the relentless surveillance of Palestinians. Israel’s dystopian end goal: to compile biometric profiles and security ratings for every resident of the West Bank.”

⚠️ Stumbling block when migrating from Amazon Linux 2 to Amazon Linux 2023:

/tmp is no longer mawscommunitye root volume but on tmpfs. As tmpfs stores files in memory, the maximum size of /tmp is determined by the EC2 instance type’s memory capacity.

Either avoid storing large files under /tmp or disable tmpfs for /mnt by using the following commands:

sudo systemctl mask tmp.mount
sudo systemctl stop tmp.mount

Okay, I am very reticent to pull off this particular band-aid but let's say hypothetically I wanted to replace #AWS with another managed host of some kind, mostly for low-traffic static asset/site hosting with HTTPS, and maybe periodically running a #Minecraft server or something for very cheap, maybe bulk data archiving (glacier), any suggestions for companies that don't suck or are at least less bad than #Amazon at comparable cost?

#Amazon's #AWS says it’s going ‘water positive’ — but there’s a problem
The company’s pledge to conserve #water at its #datacenters doesn’t account for the thirsty #powerplants that keep them running, #Microsoft and #Meta have made similar water pledges.
Data centers require large amounts of water to cool their servers, and Amazon plans to spend $100 billion to build more of them over the next decade as part of a big bet on its #AmazonWebServices# cloudcomputing platform.

#USEAST1 region is not the cloudy crock it's made out to be, claims #AWS #EC2 boss
It's the region where stuff gets stressed at scale first, says Dave Brown, as he plots variants of #Amazon's Outposts. #AmazonWebServices' US-EAST-1 region is not a problem child – it's the region where the cloudy colossus often runs things at bigger scale than elsewhere and therefore stresses services the most, according to Dave Brown, global veep for compute and networking. theregister.com/2024/04/10/aws

#Amazon’s Big Secret: Nearly 30 years after the company was founded, we still don’t really know. Amazon has long cultivated the impression that it operates its shopping platform at razor-thin margins, relying instead on its cloud division, #AmazonWebServices (#AWS), for much of its profit. BUT the #FTC #lawsuit contends that Amazon’s #ecommerce business is, in fact, “enormously profitable.”

#HISA said it also is collaborating with #AmazonWebServices and #Palantir to apply data analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence to HISA’s vast data sources to analyze the factors contributing to #equine injuries and inform potential interventions to reduce them in the future.”

@alex @emilymbender this might be a story to keep an eye on.

"#ColdWar2 will be more dangerous than #ColdWar1" – #NiallFerguson, quoting #HenryKissinger, a key, evil figure in creating and sustaining the #political atmosphere that, more than once, brought the world to the brink of #nuclear #war and annihilation during the "first" #ColdWar (which, to me, still hasn't ended, only mutated).
