This #documentary tells the story of a #Chinese #cemetery in #VictoriaBC that became a #NationalHeritage site. For Chinese #pioneers who died in Canada, Victoria's Chinese Cemetery at #HarlingPoint was a temporary resting place until their bones could be returned home. (Traditional Chinese belief says that the soul of a person who dies in a foreign place wanders lost until their bones are returned home.) This film traces the rich history of the #VancouverIsland cemetery from controversy and neglect to its revival as a #historic site. Told by those closest to it, the story of Harling Point is a metaphor for #Canada , a country still working on making a home for all who live within its borders.

Belated #3GoodThings
- started a #WikiTree profile for #48er Herman Kiefer, who had the wrong mother stated in most biographies wikitree.com/wiki/Grether-122
- finally got up my butt to photograph the entire #cemetery in #StMärgen, after wanting to do it for three years already, and really found the grave of relatives (I hoped it might still exist)
- got to rescue a bird from a well at the cemetery (see previous toots) - I guess, I was meant to go there exactly yesterday

A weathered, ornate white cross stands in the foreground, with a quaint, small church in the background. The structure is blurred, emphasizing the cross and its detailed design. This is one of the many old churches and cemeteries in Iceland.

Part of my family came here from Vilna. I wonder if I've got relatives buried under this shit 🤔

"Two years after #Vilnius, the capital of #Lithuania, vowed to preserve a former #Jewish #cemetery the #Soviets had destroyed, the government said it wanted to revive plans to build a conference center there, rekindling protests by local #Jews and beyond."

Morning of the Living Dead 🍻 for #spookysaturday

This evening I have for you a translated passage (I did my best! 😂) from Alessandro Cervellati's - Certosa Bianco e Verde (1967). This book is filled with anecdotes and stories about UNESCO world heritage site - "La Certosa", Bologna's Monumental Cemetery. Here is one of them:

"Popular tradition has no anecdotes concerning ghosts in our Certosa. But incredible things have happened all the same: On 7 August 1925, some women who had gone to the Certosa spotted a black stain in a recess in the underground area to the west around 10.15 a.m. : It was a dead man who, by mysterious chance, had not been yet buried. The Sir. Bernardi, the Certosa custodian, the priest Augusto Bastelli and two municipal guards rushed in. As the priest was about to give him absolution, they realised that the dead man was breathing, and indeed, with a yawn, he was coming back to life: in fact, he was a certain Antonio B., a resident of Via Sant'Apollonia, who declared: in order to enjoy the cool air, after a few stately drinks, he had found nothing better than to be locked up in the cemetery and find himself an ideal bed in a tomb in the Certosa". 💤 ✨

(The statue was sculpted by Bolognese Carlo Monari and is of Enea Cocchi. He died at the age of 18 in 1867.)

Petrified 🪨 for #spookysaturday episode 14

Walking through the quiet museum, you see a new exhibit. A kneeling statue of a woman, hands clasped in prayer, face carved with unbearable grief.
There is no plaque on it.
You overheard the guards earlier talking about hearing whispers and soft weeping echoing through the halls this past week… It is a museum though – there's always a ghost story knocking about.
But it is strange. There was no mention of getting a new exhibit and it seemingly appeared overnight.
After inspecting the new statue, you turn to leave. You hear a faint giggle in the air.
"Is someone here?"
Nothing. Another giggle – louder this time.
"Who are you?"
The statue’s eyes open.
"Who you are about to be." - she whispers.
The statue’s hands unclasp. ✨

I like to visit the church at Bjarnarhöfn by the shark museum in Snæfellsnes, West Iceland whenever I'm in the area because it's a cute church and sometimes there are cute sheep around. Sadly no sheep nearby on my most recent visit last month (they were being herded away by the farmer and his border collie), but the church is still cute. And no, I've never been to the shark museum. Just the church.

The Passage / Il Passaggio for 👣#monochromemonday

Taken from inside one of the buildings of Il Cimitero Monumentale La Certosa in Bologna. If you look carefully you can see there are people resting in the walls and in the floor.✨
