From memory, a useful post I read last year...
#Likes are for the *poster* to let them know you saw/liked their post.
#Boosts make the post appear in your timeline so that your *followers* can see it.
#Bookmarks are a sort of "to do" list just for *you*.
#Lists are for grouping...
Also you can follow #hashtags, which I find useful!

One great use for this is tuning your #filtered words.
If you #filter a lot of words (and you should) then you may be worried that you're #filtering out posts you would have liked to see.
Just click "filtered" and then sort by "#likes" or "#boosts" and it will show you posts you can't see that other people seem to like. This can help you decide whether to unmute some words or not.
You know how folks will tell you that you should still use likes/favorites, even if they're are private, to let people know when you enjoy their posts?
A random thing I realized that I haven't really seen pointed out before, this can also be useful for people who use the number of likes/favorites to determine which posts should be automatically deleted.
#Musk thinks #likes should be hidden: one more stone on #Twitter's tomb.
"In addition to making it more difficult to keep tabs on the powerful, McLaughlin says hiding likes also makes it harder to detect instances of manipulation or artificial engagement by bots without the ability to see which accounts have liked a post. "

Finding the post with the most likes or shares on decentralized social media is not an easy task, but makes for a fun Fediverse Exploration.

Do people ever like or stuff on Mastodon? From what I see there's only replies and reposts. Is it a bug that every post other have are zero likes or have the non algorithmic approach on #Mastodon actually nullified the use case for likes?

I agree with your approach: a Like is an appreciation, sent to the author, whereas a Boost is an elevation, sent to my followers.
An added dimension is the "cost" to others. A Like is cost-free: my followers don't see it, and the author won't lose anything through it. Whereas a Boost takes up space in my followers' timelines, and that space is scarce. Boosting is a valuable gift, but it imposes on others and we must give it sparingly.
#Online ‘#likes’ for #toxic #socialmedia #posts prompt more − and more #hateful − #messages.
The #rampant increase of #hate #messages on #socialmedia is a #scourge in today’s #technology-infused #society. #Racism, #homophobia, #Transphobia, #Xenophobia and even #personalattacks on those disagreeing with others’ #political #opinion reveal the ugly side of #humanity's online behavior.
